THE CURRICULUM

Rhythm Component

Students in LJCP rhythm classes learn about each other’s cultural backgrounds and demonstrate unity and respect for one another in their class and onstage.

Our teaching artists instruct in their respective specialties which have included: Body Music, Hambone, Afro Cuban percussion, Puerto Rican Bomba/Xica, South African percussion, and/or Hip Hop rhythm and rhyme.

Choral Component

Students learn how music can be a tool for cultural empowerment and social change.

At the end of the term, they perform songs at Oakland’s only nondenominational musical tribute to Dr. King, In the Name Of Love. This event honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and features the best talent that the Bay Area has to offer. LJCP students have the opportunity of a lifetime performing alongside these greats.

Dance Component

Our current dance faculty specialize in forms that are integral to the roots and branches of jazz music traditions. Depending on their instructor, students will learn Afro Cuban or Afro Brazilian folkloric and social dances, or Turf dancing, the prized Bay Area-grown discipline of Hip Hop dance.

Our Programs Facilitate:

  • A way for students to build community through creative expression via music in schools.

  • A deep understanding of historically marginalized cultural histories and important social justice themes.

  • A creative environment to achieve basic music and dance foundation for further exploration and participation in later public school arts programming and beyond.

  • First-hand experience of the empowering element of the arts to deepen social connections with each other and the greater community.

  • Ramon Ramos Alayo

    Dance Instructor

Ramon Ramos Alayo founded Alayo Dance Company in 2001 and is currently the resident company of CubaCaribe. As director and choreographer, his work is an innovative fusion of Afro-Cuban modern, folkloric, and popular Cuban dance. He eloquently articulates his aesthetic vision through a synthesis of these dance styles, citing from each tradition, movements, narratives, and concepts indicative of Cuban culture. It is far more diverse than most of the modern dance circuit. In Cuba, at the National School of Arts, all dance students are taught modern and traditional styles of dance and music, and the forms are not considered as disassociated as they are in the United States. Combining elements of both to produce Afro-Cuban contemporary dance allows the artist to tell a rich story from a broad palette of movement styles that is indicative of Cuban culture, but the combination of which is rarely seen in the Bay Area.

Alayo Dance Company was featured in "Dance Across America," published in National Geographic Magazine (2006). The Company has performed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area at venues such as Theater Artaud, ODC Theater, Dance Mission Theater, Herbst Theater, Laney Theater, Sonoma Country Wine Theater, and La

Living Jazz Children's Project Overview

OUR STORY

In 2005, Living Jazz answered a call.

In 2005, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) expressed that it was lacking music education in the most under-resourced schools in the district.

Students were progressing through school without music fundamentals. This made it harder for them to grow and take advantage of higher grade band classes.

At the very least– these children were missing out on experiencing the joy and transformative connection between music and learning in the classroom.

Living Jazz jumped at the chance to provide high quality music education for our local youth.

Living Jazz Children’s Project (LJCP) was founded to meet the needs of our community, and serve as a pillar to stabilize the importance of music education in public schools.

Living Jazz has a wide network of influential teaching artists from our additional programs and camps. With their inspiring teaching styles and their passion for youth, it is clear that these artists could impact the lives of these Oakland kids.

Originally, Living Jazz served a small number of Title-One schools across OUSD.

But in 2022, Living Jazz partnered with West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD), expanding the possibilities of programming and increasing the number of children served by another third.

As of right now, the Living Jazz Children’s Project now provides performing arts education to over 1,500 students in 14 public schools.

Living Jazz Children’s Project serves schools from across the wide landscape of Oakland, all the way to Richmond and San Pablo.

In 2022, Living Jazz expanded the program to include dance education for the 2022-2023 school year.

Living Jazz is proud to offer LJCP students a chance to delve into Afro Cuban and Brazilian diasporic dance forms with our new teachers. And, we are thrilled to be giving kids the chance to experience Turf Dancing, a bay area signature street dance that exploded out of Oakland in the early 2000s.
